When you are new to meditation it can seem like a daunting task to quiet your mind and sit motionless. Clearing your thoughts and just being. Disconnecting from reality you perceive with your senses and connecting with the oneness that underlies everything. If you struggle controlling your mind and clearing your thoughts, I recommend starting with guided meditations. This will give you guidance by someone who has experience and prepares you with ways to control your mind with focus. There are several free apps for your phone or YouTube videos you can use to get you started with even greater ease. I highly recommend checking out several of Ram Dass guided meditations ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0y0586ffZWQ ) to get you started as his connection, voice and guidance have been helpful to many people before you.
First, while most people recommend sitting cross-legged(in lotus position), it is also possible to meditate while walking or even laying in shavasana( laying flat with your legs spread shoulder width and arms slightly spread out to your side ). You can be in whatever position works best for you.
Through my practice I have produced a simple list of tips to help you with your meditation practice.
- Focus your energy on your third eye (the space between and slightly above your eyes)
- Have clear intentions on your meditation. This can simply be to quiet your mind and find peace or focus your energy on manifesting.
- Maintain a feeling of gratitude and positivity. This is important to ensure your energy and vibration are attracting the right energy towards you.
- Maintain complete relaxation. This should be so effortless and relaxing that you forget your physical body and become one with spirit.
- Stay open to mental images, intuition, symbols, situations, synchronicities. It may come later after the meditation is over.
These are the very basic building blocks for starting your meditation practice off on the right foot. When done correctly, it should revitalize you and give you an overwhelming sense of joy. This joy originates in knowing that you are one with everything and the divine flows through you like the stardust you are made of.
